Feeling the Winter Slump? Here’s a Mid-Year Boost

Hi Reader,

We are officially in the second half of the school year. If you're anything like me, you might be wondering where on earth the time has gone!

Winter can be a tricky time for motivation, both for teachers and students. It's cold, there are competing priorities in the school calendar and some of the initial buzz and momentum may have fallen away.

In this newsletter I will share some helpful resources and ideas designed to spark motivation and help get everyone focused and on track for the rest of the year!

How well do you know your neighbours?

Novelty is a great ingredient to increase curiosity and buy-in for students. A great way to "shake things up", is to organise an opportunity for students to mingle with peers from their sister/brother school.

The students can share their ideas and challenges with each other, and have a lot of fun in the process!

It can also be an affordable way to organise a Yellow Arrow workshop, as the two schools can share the costs.

See photos below from the recent gathering of year 10 leaders at St Joseph's College, Ferntree Gully and Mater Christi College, Belgrave.

Interested in running a joint workshop? Let’s chat about what’s possible.

The Half Year Reset Journal

Journalling is a powerful tool to assist with focus and motivation. Struthless has created a helpful resource to encourage reflection and redirection for the second half of the year. Check out the video below to hear more about it, and click the link below to download it directly.

For the Bookshelf

Keen to encourage your students' love of learning? Share short excerpts from leadership books as part of your meetings!

"Who Moved My Cheese" by Dr Spencer Johnson is a great parable that explores different reactions to change.

Here are some excerpts:

“What you are afraid of is never as bad as what you imagine. The fear you let build up in your mind is worse than the situation that actually exists.”

“See what you're doing wrong, laugh at it, change and do better.”

“What would you do if you weren't afraid?”

“Old beliefs do not lead you to new cheese”

Leadership as a subject

Hi Reader, Lately I’ve been hearing a lot of teachers talk about the shift towards explicit teaching and what that means for student-led learning. As someone passionate about experiential approaches, I’ll admit I was nervous at first that hands-on learning might become collateral damage. I believe the best learning happens when we bring the two together: explicit teaching provides the scaffolding, and student-led experiences give students the confidence to apply it. How is your school...

Hi Reader, I’m excited to share something we’ve been working on at Yellow Arrow — a leadership curriculum designed to make it easy for schools to embed leadership education directly into the classroom. Project Santiago features two units, each planned to run over 12 weeks. Complete lesson plans, videos, and resources are all included — everything teachers need to pick it up and run with confidence. Our goal? To make it as easy as possible for schools to embed leadership learning, while...

The perils of cookie cutter leadership When we think of leaders, we often picture someone confident, outspoken, and ready to take charge. But the truth is, great leadership comes in many forms. If we expect all student leaders to fit the same mould, we risk stifling their potential instead of helping them thrive. At Yellow Arrow, we believe it is important to help students discover and embrace their unique leadership style. When students understand their strengths, they lead with more...
