Plan your year
There is a lot to coordinate in your role, and having a clear plan helps to prevent stress and have everything run smoothly. To help make your lives easier, we have put together a planning guide! Click the link below to get a copy and get started with your planning today:
There are many different ways to be a leader, and you have a great opportunity in your role to help your students identify their personal leadership style. We have developed a quiz to help your students gain insight into their skills and identify areas for personal growth. The questions and categories in the quiz are informed by well established theories and research. Rest assured, no data is stored on our website. Your students' responses are solely for their personal reflection and growth.
Enhance Your Student Leadership Program with Our Leadership Skills Quiz
Sometimes students can have a perception that they aren't a "real leader" unless they have an official role. This video helps demonstrate the significance of being a leader in the little moments. Share it with your students to encourage reflection.
Often we can focus on what we don't want, rather than visualising what success looks like. As our subconscious mind doesn't understand the negative, it is important to help our students focus on what they want so they can create positive neural pathways.
A great activity to help them do this is to invite them to create a vision board. Provide magazines and ask them to rip or cut out any pictures and words that resonate with them. It is important to do it this way rather than having them specifically google images to print out. Once they are happy with their selection, ask them to glue them on a large poster or card, and display somewhere that they can look at regularly.
Build your "Teacher Toolkit"
Keen to develop further in your role? We can support you with online and face-to-face professional learning. Our Teacher Toolkit training is a full day interactive session where we share our go-to activities, help you plan your year and problem solve key challenges that student leadership coordinators face in their role. This session is scheduled in by request and the host school receives three free places for teachers to attend. Reach out if you would like to host the teachers from schools in your area.
Prefer to work online at your own pace? Check out our online course for teachers in the Student Leadership Coordinator role!
Keen to encourage your students' love of learning? Share short excerpts from leadership books as part of your meetings!
"Dare to Lead" by Brene Brown
"Dare to Lead" by Brene Brown encourages leaders to be courageous, vulnerable and grounded in the face of challenges. It's based on research into courage, empathy, vulnerability, and leadership.
Here are some excerpts:
“At the end of the day, at the end of the week, at the end of my life, I want to say I contributed more than I criticized.”
“The courage to be vulnerable is not about winning or losing, it’s about the courage to show up when you can’t predict or control the outcome.”
“If you are not in the arena getting your ass kicked on occasion, I’m not interested in or open to your feedback. There are a million cheap seats in the world today filled with people who will never be brave with their lives but who will spend every ounce of energy they have hurling advice and judgment at those who dare greatly. Their only contributions are criticism, cynicism, and fearmongering. If you’re criticizing from a place where you’re not also putting yourself on the line, I’m not interested in what you have to say.”

Hi Reader, I’m excited to share something we’ve been working on at Yellow Arrow — a leadership curriculum designed to make it easy for schools to embed leadership education directly into the classroom. Project Santiago features two units, each planned to run over 12 weeks. Complete lesson plans, videos, and resources are all included — everything teachers need to pick it up and run with confidence. Our goal? To make it as easy as possible for schools to embed leadership learning, while...
The perils of cookie cutter leadership When we think of leaders, we often picture someone confident, outspoken, and ready to take charge. But the truth is, great leadership comes in many forms. If we expect all student leaders to fit the same mould, we risk stifling their potential instead of helping them thrive. At Yellow Arrow, we believe it is important to help students discover and embrace their unique leadership style. When students understand their strengths, they lead with more...
At the start of the year, student leaders are full of energy and big ideas. This is the perfect time to build momentum by fostering trust and intrinsic motivation—helping them stay engaged and confident in their leadership roles. When students feel valued, empowered, and supported, they are more likely to take initiative and sustain their enthusiasm throughout the year. This edition is all about practical ways to harness that early energy, build trust, and create meaningful leadership...
